The UA929 Story
Posted on: 2004-09-11 16:04:30 (read: 1633 times)
...and then?Anonymous writes: "You might be interested to hear that Captain Ballard recently presented the story of UA929 to the members of the Commerical Aviation Safety Symposium in Dallas Texas. The Symposium, hosted by the Aerospace and Defense Division of the American Society for Quality, was attended by over two hundred aviation professionals from around the world, all with an obvious interest in the UA929 saga.

I must admit to a certain amount of skeptism when I first read the brief introduction to Captain Ballard's talk. I thought, "What could be interesting about a flight that made it home safely?". Captain Ballard quickly and convincingly changed my mind by bringing the entire audience back in time to that day, when we were all unsure as to what had happened, who had done it, and just if it was over or not.

Captain Ballard stressed three points during his talk which will always stay with me. First was his pride in his crew and company for their behaviours in a very difficult situation. Second was the support and cooperation of the passengers of UA929. Last but not least was his appreciation for the peoples of Gandor, Gambo and the Canadian authorities for all that they did for all the flights and stranded passengers of those days.

Yours is an inspiring story well told by Captain Ballard. It was a priviledge to be in the audience to hear it."

Take care, be happy.

Just visiting
Posted on: 2003-04-29 02:49:46 (read: 1312 times)
...and then?bobsmithuk writes: "Hi

Just wondering if anyone is still alive out there. No one (other than Gerwyn) is answering emails these days, either in the US, UK, Newfoundland, or the rest of the world. It’s more than 2 months since anyone form the flight has posted anything up here.

Had a great trip back to England, with short trips to Wales and France last month (March). A seven hour layover both ways in Toronto was part of the trip. We don’t seem to have contracted SARs during our stay.

It just worked out that we didn’t manage to get to see anyone from the flight this trip for one reason or another. Whatever, it was lovely to be home for a short while and see one of my daughters. The eldest now lives in Melbourne, Australia, working as a nurse. We plan to see her in December, wars and finances permitting.

Anyone got any thoughts they want to share on Iraq? Any ideas why most of the causalities among the Brits are from American ‘friendly’ fire and why no Americans have been shot by the Brits? Was/is it worth it? I have to admit that I swing between thinking yes or no. Probably depends on where the moon is at the time.

Anyway, to anyone still visiting.

Take care, be happy.

Bob

More on June Reunion/concert
Posted on: 2002-04-26 03:20:12 (read: 489 times)
...and then?bob-smith writes: "April 25, 2002

Dear Friends:

I am writing to let you know about an exciting concert that I hope you can attend on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 8:00 p.m. Julian Dawson, a British country/folk singer who is celebrating his 25th year as an international performer in 2002 with the release of his 10th CD “Hillbilly Zen,” will perform at Unity Temple, 875 Lake Street, in Oak Park, Illinois. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under the age of 12.

I met Julian on September 11, 2001 when we were traveling from London to Chicago on United Airlines Flight 929. Due to the tragic events of that day we were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland and spent five days and nights together in a Salvation Army Church in Gambo, Newfoundland. Julian was easy to recognize. He is six feet six inches tall, as bald as Michael Jordan, and he was the only passenger who was successfully able to place phone calls from our aircraft on the satellite phone while we were on the tarmac for 19 hours! Only later did I come to know him as a wonderful human spirit with a great voice and a repertoire of over 2000 folk songs. Julian entertained our 200 passengers on a nightly basis and penned a song “Waiting for A Plane” to capture our experience in Newfoundland.

I was thrilled when Julian e-mailed me and asked if I could arrange a venue for him to perform in Chicago as part of his United States tour. Unity Temple is a Unitarian Universalist meeting place that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It has excellent acoustics. Julian is just completing a tour of Germany where his songs are quite popular and is hoping to build his U.S. following. On his recent CD he collaborated with Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams on two tunes and I urge you to check out his music at his website www.juliandawson.com. If you click on “Songs” and have an MP-3 player you can listen to a variety of his songs.

I hope that you will be able to join me on June 8th to hear Julian Dawson in concert. Please call me at (312) 422-7700 Ext. 233 for tickets or information or e-mail me at dburke6945@aol.com.

Yours truly,

Dan Burke

Hoping for a "nonstop"

I am scheduled to fly from Chicago to London on 14 April and return on UA 929 on Friday 24 April. It must very crowded on the return as I have middle seat in the five seat section. (Won't be like that nice bulkhead, economy plus seat I had on 11 September).

I hope to see some of my new friends on the outbound or return. And although I would adore seeing Gambo friends again, I want to make the flight "nonstop" this time.

Looking forward to the rides!

I got a few calls from web and regular TV producers who want to use the video footage for a story to honor the hospitality UA929 and Delta passengers received in Gambo.

Before I provide them with a high quality copy of the video tape I want to make sure that nobody has any objections to having the video displayed on TV.

So here is my question: would anyone who does not want one of the videos to appear on TV email me soonest (before Tuesday)? Many Thanks.

Take care!

Monty

PS All of you who have asked for a copy of the video: please give me a little bit more time. I have not forgotten about it!"

Update on Julian's Progress
Posted on: 2001-10-25 19:20:40 (read: 658 times)
...and then?I spoke to Julian yesterday. He sounded really well. He had a bit of a setback last weekend, in that his surgery wound became badly infected, but with a couple of rounds of anti-biotics it's now got it licked, and Julian is far more comfortable.
He has also had the results of the tests which were done at the time of surgery - they show that his lymph nodes are clear of any trace of cancer, which is excellent news.
He starts precautionary radiotherapy early next month just to make sure everything is ok, and he is keeping active with all the physiotherapy excercises they've given him to do.
He is already planning on gigging again soon and is now clearing his backlog of email, snail mail and all those things which mount up when you take time out!!
Julian said that everyone's been wonderful, and really supportive, and he sends everyone thanks for all their best wishes - and he's looking forward to getting time to come online again... and is still desperate to record Waiting for a Plane for us, despite me urging him to take it easy!!

GTE Airfone Charges show Up

...and then?Anonymous writes: "When I finally got through to my wife using the GTE Airfone on the morning of 12 Sept, we spoke for 5 minutes. The charge ?

$180.13. Hmm, I guess I should be glad to see that some US company profited from the events of 11 Sep. Maybe I should view it as helping the US economy. $36/min, wow at that rate I think I should have had more than a phone call.........I called GTE and found that they were charging a satellite connect rate of $10 per for each call attempt that didn't connect. They stated that the phone told me this. I recall it saying the sat rate was $10/min, but not that calls not connected received a connect charge. So you have the spectrum, at one end Gambonians the other GTEvils.

Julian - Get well soon!
Posted on: 2001-10-07 08:17:32 (read: 997 times)
...and then?Everyone,
I spoke to Julian today. He is going into hospital tomorrow (Monday) for the male equivalent of a full mastectomy following the results of a biopsy he had before our Gambo trip. He is likely to be in hospital for the rest of the week, and then it's a case of seeing how it has gone.

Despite this - he is still going to try to record Waiting for a Plane this afternoon as he wants it up on the website for everyone!!

I said we would all have everything crossed for him - and sending him all the best wishes we can muster... he said that it was a case of the 'more people rooting for him, the better' so I'm making sure you all know and can root for him!! :-)

I've been back at work two days and have spent time with family and friends, but also miss the sense of 'home' and community that we found in Gambo. I will hold this experience in my heart forever, and I will pray for everyone who has lost so very much that light, goodness and hope can come from the ashes of horror. I hope that everyone is home and safe and secure."

Keeping a Little Gambo With Me

...and then?Ruth writes: "Sunday at the Marriott O'Hare -- king sized bed, clean sheets, all the hot water in the world, and room service. Departed for Houston and home at noon Monday.

I found myself searching for that spark of friendship, that feeling of shared experience we were all privileged to have in the faces of the other passengers at O'Hare, the flight crew on the way home, but it wasn't there. At first, and sometimes still, it makes me a little lonely to feel it missing. Now, though, I try to carry a little Gambo with me everywhere I go, to keep an open heart and an open mind, with my friends, family, coworkers, or even if only to let someone in in traffic.

That, I think, is the best way to repay the kindness of strangers, now friends. Spread their kindness to the next person you meet."

As far as I could determine it seemed that eventually everyone was taken care off satisfactory. Even though not everyone was on their manifest (now, how can that be possible?) including myself. But with connecting flights (including hotel and meal vouchers if necessary) and upgrades United did their best.

...and then?Hi everyone! Just a quickie from me...I arrived back at Heathrow Sunday morning and after a pleasant hour with United's baggage guys trying to locate my Swiss Army knife that never made it to Chicago, I joined my car parked in London and drove the three and a half hours to home - a hazardous affair (Asleep At The Wheel were always one of my favourite bands!)

Spent most of Sunday phoning New Yorkers and others that I couldn't reach from Gambo. Needless to say that was an experience I wouldn't have missed for the world - truly amazing how we all come through in a crisis. Big thanks to all passengers, crew and "Newfies" for being so wonderful to each other.

A number of people asked about CDs etc. and my website Guestbook has chosen this week to throw a wobbly (I'm told that the huge increase in Internet traffic is causing lots of strange problems). Anyway if that takes a while to fix, anyone who wants to can e-mail me direct at home and I can put you in touch with the mail order company for CDs. They are listed on the website and cost £12.00 plus postage anywhere in the world. You can see the CDs on the site.

So, my address is jdawson@headlines.demon.co.uk - I'd love to hear from anyone who feels like writing. It's hard to come back to reality after such an intense emotional explosion. Getting there slowly!

Love and peace to all, JD
